Colony Memories
- The colony and people
Frampton Family pictures
These two pictures were taken
during our first days at the Canyon. Below are my mother, me and
my dad. I was 4 years old. On the right; my mom and I are posing
in the tail race - you can see the "wing wall" in the
background.

In 1939 we lived in a temporary home. It was a
tar paper covered house perched on the edge of an eroding
cliff, overlooking the river and power house. There was a rope
tied to the porch and my dad and I used it to go down to the
river to swim. |
|
We moved into one of the regular
colony houses in 1940. It was a small bungalow. In the picture
below, it's the one in the centre.

I
received my first electric train set while living there, as well
as a cowboy outfit.

On the left is where we lived
for most of our time in the colony. It was the first house in
the row of houses and
right next to the hospital. In the lower picture you can see
where it is in relation to the other houses.
The first bungalow is the nurse's residence as
well as the little hospital
We moved to this larger house
because my mother was expecting and we would need more room. |

My brother Barry arrived
in 1942. Here are the two of us being towed on our
toboggan. Below, on the wagons, are Barry, me, Angus and
Billy Armstrong, our next door neighbours. |

Barry and me on
the dam in winter - and hiking in the bush, a bit more grown up.
I am wearing my dad's "Civil Guard" beret. |
In
our kitchen - Barry, my mother and my grandmother Thomson. My
mother was the Post Master in the colony's small post office, so
in 1942 my grandmother came to live with us and look after my
brother and I. On the right - I'm all dressed up and ready to
play the piano at a Recreation Centre concert. |

This is a small cabin several of us built. It was located near
"the landing". This picture was taken while three of us where
spending a weekend at the cabin - my dad and brother came to
visit - or maybe he was checking up on us.
