Staff House
The
colony staff house where single employees lived. |

Residents of the staff house pose for the camera. |
A view of the Staff House from
the baseball diamond.
Baseball was a very popular summertime activity, despite the
mosquitos. Often smudge fires kept the insects at bay but made
the game hard to watch.

|
In this view
from the baseball field you can see, from left to right, the
recreation hall, staff house the small single story building is the
hospital where the nurse lived, and the house to the right of the
hospital was our home. |
The
Recreation Hall
was a centre of activity, especially during the winter months. There
were first run movies every second weekend. My Dad was the
projectionist. The multipurpose spaces include a badminton court,
stage, kitchen, library, dressing rooms and so on. |
|
|
Every Christmas the school children put on a concert - just
before Santa arrived with presents for all. I have some pictures
of these events; unfortunately they have deteriorated to the
extent that they cannot be reproduced. |

After school -
that's me on the left. |

Every second
Saturday we went to the movies. We got to see the latest movies
thanks to the Recreation Club committee. |
Sports
and other activities
There was also an indoor rink just beyond the railway tracks.
The ice was natural so cold weather was required to make the
ice. This never seemed to be a problem. |

My mom was a very active person. She liked to skate and
ski. Here she is on the left with her skates heading to
the rink.
Cross country skiing was very popular and she never
passed up a chance to head out on the trails around the
Canyon colony. |
|
.
Our part husky, Blackie, pulled us around on the
colony roads. Here is is pulling my brother
Barry and me. |
|
|
This
is me ready to ski down the "water tower" hill. When I
was 9, I ran into the side of the hospital and broke my
leg. That wasn't fun but it did get my mom and me a trip
to the hospital in Cochrane. In Cochrane, you could get
ice cream. |
|
|
|
Another favourite pastime was target shooting. The recreation
club built a shooting range and many canyonites used it. Here
are three of them. Left to right: Dorothy "Dot" Frampton (my
mother), Gwen Roach and Hazel Chalmers, both teachers at the two
room school. |

Fishing was popular with some. Here are two unidentified
fishermen with their catch.
I
think I know who these two are, but I can't be 100% sure. If you
can identify them, please email me.
