Looking
for an excuse to go to Las Vegas?
Come and
join us in a celebration!
Fifty years ago,
on November 9, 1957, Jacqueline Bertsch of Tallmadge Ohio, and Richard Frampton
of North Bay, Ontario, Canada, were married. The marriage took place in the
Goodyear Heights United Presbyterian Church in Akron Ohio.
How these two met was the subject of a story that appeared
in the
Tilden Lake Community Newsletter.

To celebrate 50 years, the original wedding party are
getting together in Las Vegas in November 2007. Richard and
Jacqueline's son, Richard Densmore (Denny) will conduct a
"Renewal of Vows". |

The marriage in 1957 was conducted by Doctor Rose, a very
flamboyant minister who emphasized words such as "obey"
during ceremony.
The wedding
party left to right:
.....●
Patricia Bertsch, sister of the bride and Maid-of-Honour
.....●
Jacqueline Bertsch, the Bride
.....●
Richard Frampton, the Groom
.....●
Douglas Smith, long time friend of the groom and Best Man
This is the way we were in 1957. Have we changed in 50
years? One way to find out and that is to join us in
November.
But if you can't be there, here are a couple more recent
pictures.

Although the picture at the left shows us camping at
Tildenmere Camp in 1975, the actually camping story begins
in 1948. In 1948, a family from Tallmadge, Ohio, was on a
summer camping and fishing trip through northern Ontario.
While on their way north on Highway 11, it started to rain –
so instead of camping, they decided to find a cottage. Fate
led them to the Ellesmere’s camp on Tilden Lake. The family
were the Bertsches, Adrian and Geraldine, and their three
children, Jackie, Pat and Tony.

This accident of fate led to a long friendship between the
Ellesmeres and the Bertsches. The Bertsch family returned to
Tilden Lake many summers. Adrian Bertsch was a general
contractor in Ohio and was involved in some of the construction
of Tildenmere Camp. The Bertsch family also acquired their own
crown land on the lake, adjacent to Tildenmere. There they built
a cottage, using wood from the Ellesmere’s mill on the Tomiko
River. It was the the first building on
the road into the camp |

Fast forward to 1956. Early summer
and three local North Bay boys, Doug Smith, Len Risley and Dick
Frampton decided to stop at Ted’s Drive In on Algonquin Avenue for a
Pronto Pup and milk shake. We spotted three young women getting into
a blue Ford with Ohio plates. We though we recognized one of the
girls – it looked like Gwen Ellesmere. Who were these other girls
and where were they going? Curiosity got the best of us. We decided
to follow them. Twenty seven miles later we found out. We had
discovered the Bertsch’s cottage and Tildenmere Camp. The three
girls were Gwen Ellesmere and Pat and Jackie Bertsch. The rest is
history. In the fall 1957, Jackie Bertsch left home in Ohio and came
to North Bay. We have been together ever since, 45 years on November
9, 2002.
The Bertsches gradually stopped going to their cottage on Tilden
Lake. Instead they started spending winters in Florida. The
Ellesmeres sold the camp. Eventually the cottage was sold to the new
owners of Tildenmere. We kept a piece of the property that had space
to camp and a boathouse and dock, but eventually we sold that as
well.

Now we live on Vancouver Island. In 1994, we visited the
site of the cottage and lodge. The cottage was gone and the
area was being developed. Very sad, but the memories will be
with us forever
