Things we've done to our camper to improve its functionality.

Our Volkswagen EuroVan Camper was the perfect vehicle for us. It was fun to drive, with its great visibility and easy and sure footed handling. Like everyone, we added a few things. Here are some of the additions.

Cellular telephone - This was a priority while we were still doing business. Now we find we can't do without. The cell phone was a permanently mounted 4 watt unit, connected to the best possible external antenna. This gave us range that is far superior to handheld cell phones. It is fully hands free. The phone was powered by the coach battery and was on at all times when we traveled. To avoid unnecessary costs when roaming, our cell phone number was know to family members only.

GPS - Mounted on the top of the dash was our Garmin III+. It could be connected to our laptop computer so in theory, we would never get lost.

Custom Console

  • Console - Custom console with Eddie Bauer cup holders and lots of storage. Our trusty "limited edition" hatchet is mounted on right side of the console. The serious axe is carried in the rear storage area.

  • Map Net - We've placed netting under the glove box for stuffing our current maps.

  • Voltmeter - Mounted on the dash, our voltmeter monitors the charging circuit, vehicle battery and coach battery.

  • Clock - A large analog clock; an aid to navigation and estimating ETAs.

  • Panasonic radio with remote control. Now we can operate our radio from bed.

  • Indoor outdoor thermometer - Very useful!

  • Compass - The illuminated compass mounted on top of the dash has become somewhat redundant since we got our GPS.

  • Vehicle Alarm - The alarm, with its clearly visible flashing red diode, acts as a deterrent.

seat back storage

Seat back storage - Shock cords on the seat backs give us storage for those large flat items that don't fit elsewhere.

Porta-potti - Maybe this item should be on the camping stuff page, but its use isn't limited to camping trips!

The potti is in a box and is secured to the passenger seat base while traveling. The box is covered with gray material and the multi coloured cushion.

Grades - Living in the Pacific Northwest means mountain grades. I like to grade instrument know how steep the hills are so we installed this device. The  conversion table - degrees to percent grade - tells us how steep the grade is in percent.

On a trip from the coastal BC community of Bella Coola into the interior, we encountered one hill where 20 kilometers of the road had the indicator right off scale. wind deflector

Wind Deflectors - A recent addition to the EuroVan, these deflectors are very useful, particularly in the wet weather.
